Alternately, one can also look at implementing a SQL*BackTrack for Sybase with 
ADSM module. This will allow for Sybase DB to be backed up either in 'hot' or 
'cold' modes. We are evaluating this and find this to be quite a good solution 
for us.

What you want to do in Sybase is "dump database."  The database does not
have to be shut down nor do all users have to be out.  However, we have our
dumps scheduled using Unix cron to backup after hours.

A sybase dump is like a disk image of the entire database.  This is what
ADSM should be backing up.
