There are rumours that the development on the Accelis has been put on
hold. Don't know why, IBM is very skimpy on information where it
concerns Accelis in general and the possible upgradeability of 3575
ATL's to support Accelis format drives and tapes.

There is though information on the Ultrium front. IBM will deliver
Ultrium not in it's own libraries (best would have probably been an
adapted 3494, like to see IBM's explanation on why high-end shops
should by super expensive 3590 i.s.o Ultrium) but for starters they're
OEM'ing an ADIC library and putting there Ultrium in the ADIC ATL.

     regards Walter Ridderhof

Ah, tape technology,

Thanks for the tutorial Kelly.

I inherited a 3575-L06 with type C drives, and our current application has used
most of it. The boss is keen for an enterprise backup strategy too, so we
need an upgrade. Now I was considering an upgrade to XL (7GB) tapes at a cost
of about $AUD 120 each, but serendipitously I came across the information about
the LTO offerings and Accelis in particular. This looks a far better investment
assuming that the library can be upgraded to Acellis drives and that it can
physically take the new format tapes (Accelis generation 1 has a capacity of
25GB per tape).

There is an IBM Ultrium device which is obviously very close to general
availbility, but no mention af anything in the Accelis format.

Has anyone heard any rumours of a real product based on Accelis? Time frames?
Will 3575 Libraries be field upgradeable to the new technology?
Will TSM need to be upgraded to support the new devices?

I'd hate to spend a lot of my budget and have it obsoleted a week later by an
announcement.
