We had a similar problem with 3590s in a 3494 it required a new ATAPE driver
and microcode changes so the drive correctly reported it was cleaning the
drive. I am sorry that I do not have the exact releases as this happened
over a year ago but I thought it might help you to determine what is
happening in your case.
