A technique that I've used in the past is to to a delete volume xxxxxx
discarddata=yes, then after a few files have been deleted, cancel the process!

It seemed that the delete volume would drop files from the volume in sequential
order and that once you had got by the "damaged" area of the tape, other
commands such as move data would work correctly.

Your milage might vary....
