Businesses are experiencing tremendous data growth rates. The
complexity and critical nature of this data requires flexible,
reliable, highly scalable solutions with comprehensive data
protection techniques and broad storage management function.
Customers are increasingly challenged by the administrative cost of
providing proper management of this data. IBM addresses these issues
with ADSTAR (R) Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM), one of the most
universal, open, tailorable, cost effective and intelligent storage
management solutions in the marketplace. ADSM is designed with an
extendable architecture, to grow with your storage enterprise needs.
IBM plans to extend ADSM's scalability, manageability, and
performance by extending its enterprise management capabilities,
beyond those introduced in ADSM Version 3.1, to include comprehensive
central administration management and automation of multiple ADSM
servers and clients. As a result of the high distributed data
growth, network bandwidth constraints, and/or organizational
requirements, many large customers are finding that they need to
deploy multiple ADSM servers to meet their data availability
requirements. However, they also want to be able to better leverage
administrative management skills to minimize staffing costs while
ensuring that their data is protected properly. The new extensions
to ADSM are intended to enable fewer administrators to manage more
data and provide a comprehensive solution that makes it easier to
perform tasks to help safeguard data.
In Version 3.1, ADSM introduced a unique Server-to-Server
communication feature that allows ADSM data to be passed
between two or more ADSM servers. This feature can be used to
implement workload balancing, sharing of tape libraries located on
one ADSM server, and electronic vaulting of ADSM server backups,
which provides off-site backups for disaster protection without the
manual effort of handling and delivering tapes to a vault. ADSM's
Web-based administrative client provides network-centric management
features to allow administrators to operate on any ADSM Version 3.1
server from any supported Web browser within the enterprise.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
In order to free up organizations from mundane storage
management tasks and allow them to focus on using their data as a
true competitive resource, IBM plans to enhance ADSM's current
central administration capabilities by the introduction of the ADSM
Enterprise Administration Console. This new interface is intended to
provide the administrator with an enhanced global view of the ADSM
deployment from one place that can be accessed from anywhere in the
enterprise. From this central interface, administrators will be able
to manage multiple ADSM server implementations as a single entity in
a coordinated and user friendly fashion. IBM plans to include the
following ADSM enterprise console functions:
o ADSM Enterprise Administration Console to allow an administrator
or a help desk to navigate and perform functions on any ADSM
client or server from a supported Web browser. For example, the
help desk will be able to assist users by remotely restoring
files on the ADSM clients.
o ADSM Enterprise Logon to eliminate the need to have multiple IDs
and passwords and to logon to multiple servers and clients
separately.
o ADSM Enterprise Policy Management to allow centrally defined
policy and configuration information to be used by ADSM servers.
o ADSM Enterprise Command Routing to allow an administrator to
perform tasks, such as queries, on groups of ADSM servers with a
single command.
o ADSM Enterprise Event Logging and Reporting to allow better
proactive management of a dynamic environment by consolidating
events from groups of ADSM servers and clients on a single
console and activity log. A variety of reports can be run on
these consolidated events using stored macros or Structured Query
Language (SQL).
In addition, IBM will deliver enhanced automation features to
eliminate or reduce staff-intensive manual procedures, such as
monitoring and enlarging the ADSM database and recovery log.
The planned benefits to be provided through the central
administration and automation enhancements include:
o Administrative costs to be reduced for organizations which
utilize broader deployments of ADSM to meet the needs of
expanding data protection requirements
o Scalability and performance enhancements to meet business's high
availability requirements and service level agreements
o Service options to be broadened to allow administrators to
perform remote client actions
o Systems integrity improvements to allow automatic resolution or
notification to staff of specific problems
