Can DSMCUTIL.EXE be used on a version 2 client? My clients have just
recently gotten nine NT servers set up with ADSM and invested a lot of time
into training the people who will be responsible for restoring files. I
don't want to ask them to switch to version3 just yet if I don't have to.

I've tried several time to install the ADSM service twice on a single machine
and I can't get it to work. I have ADSM installed twice in two different
directories on my NT machine, but when I check the registry, although both
node names are out there, only one of the directories is showing. And then
everything is mucked up and I can't install ANY ADSM server. Does anyone
know what else in the registry gets updated?

Thanks for your help.

The new version 3 scheduler service installation/configuration tool
(dsmcutil.exe) does support multiple installing and configuring multiple
client
services on the same machine. All of the service registry entries are
serialised so that each service can point to a different options file, use a
different node name, etc.

Just a few thoughts...

It should be possible to get two different scheduler services running on
the same machine, at least when using "client polling" method. You can
use the srvany-tool to run more than one scheduler as a service, even
when the installation tool that comes with ADSM does not provide this
option.

I didn't try this yet, but I'm not sure about the method the server uses
to contact/trigger a client. When the server uses a predefined hardcoded
port-address to establish a connection to the client, then I guess
you'll have problems. Just try it out, but keep in mind that this
problem might occurs. Only when all communication is initially
originated by the client, I think it could work (client polling). To use
the scheduler as designed, you then have to define two different
nodenames for the two instances.

In some OS it is possible to have more than one IP-addresses AND bind
different applications to different addresses. That would solve the
server's problem of connecting to one certain instance of the service on
one client. I haven't heared of this option for NT.
