I experienced a similar behaviour at one of our customers recently.

It seems, that if one attempts a checkin while some tapes are not in their
slots (i.e. mounted in a drive), ADSM (V2.1) will possibly use these slots
(and the library inventory broken afterwards). May one could call this a bug...
