Dan,

I think you misunderstood Del's reply.  I don't think Del intended to imply
that both the DIR and IS are lumped together into one object but rather that
each DB is treated as a single object.  In other words, the DIR is separate
from the IS.

The point is that  the contents of these databases (mailboxes, folders, etc.)
are not individually adressable by the backup API.   The DIR and IS are
handled as separate entities and further, it is possible to restore the Public
and
Private portions of the IS separately.

Del,

  The information you provide below seems to be contradicted by the
capabilities of Backup Exec.  It treats the Directory and Information Store
as separate entities.  In fact, you are not supposed to be able to restore
an Exchange Directory to another machine with a different name, with any
product.  I am all but positive that Backup Exec uses documented Exchange
APIs.

I stand somewhat confused,
