Well, our MVS uses IBM's open system adapter & our AIX uses fddi's.
If the clients are on the same subnet the max we've seen is, running 9
concurrent processes, 30-ish GB/hr with archives. That is with
     compression no
we first run to a diskpool to buffer things so we can have all the
concurrent sessions without having a bazillion tape drives.
A peak month on an AIX server was running 200-ish GB/night and the
monthly total traffic on the server was 8.6 TeraBytes

I'd like to say it was keen planning but I think it was more blind
luck, as far as the configuration goes...
     later
         Dwight

We have been running a single ADSM for MVS server to two years now and
have been satisfied with the backup througput for smaller OS/2, NT,
AIX clients. We run ADSM on ES/9021-982 (60 MIP engines), our network
backbone is 16 Mbs Token-Ring and we use a Cysco CIP (channel interface
processor) to move the data from the TR up to MVS. We back up an
average of 25GB a night (750 GB per month) and have been acheiving
1200 KB/sec throughput on our locally attached clients.

We have recently received requests for centralized backup of some
very large open systems (UNIX based) data marts. We currently have two
and expect two to four more within the next year. The backup
requirement will be 100s of GBs per night. Is a dedicated ADSM for
AIX server capable of such throughput? We plan to install a dedicated
high-speed network (ATM or Gigabit Ethernet) and to purchase a powerful
UNIX-based backup server to satisfy this need, but I'm afraid that
ADSM can't achieve the type of throughput requirements that we have.

I would like to know what is the fastest ADSM backup throughput that
you have been able to achieve with an AIX or UNIX based ADSM server
and a high-speed network between your clients and the server.

We've got to provide some type of solution soon, and I know that an
MVS-based ADSM server won't support our needs. I've done testing with
an ESCON connection from an SP2 to our ADSM for MVS server, and
the best throughput I could achieve for a single backup session
over CLIOS was 1.8 MB/sec.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. I have a feeling
that there are many others out there like me who are "tyring to
acheive the impossible"!Have you succeeded or even come close??
