Sean,

Certainly the most important thing you need do is get the name resolution
configured (as recommended by an earlier post) and the /etc/host file
sounds like your quickest solution. It would seem to me that you would be
having performance related problems without DNS configured.

If you are looking to set selection names different from the IP Hostname,
Tavve Software has product for NetView called Toolkit that has commands
allowing you to change selection names (and any other field that makes
sense to change, actually) in a GUI or using the command-line via
scripting. The Toolkit has a ton of other functionality as well.

HTH,
Dave

you will be changing the label using the API, but if you are, check out

Subject: [nv-l] Changing the label of an existing object

Hello All,

Has anyone ever decided that they needed to change the Label on a whole set
of devices in their NetView environment?.

I have a large network that has a number of devices configured in specific
IP ranges, making it very easy to create Smart Sets and manage these
devices. We have integrated NetView with the Tivoli TEC and it is working
nicely all bar that fact that most of my devices have a label of the IP
Address. So when our 24/7 Operations team receive the message they have no
idea what device it is and off the importance of this device.

This could be resolved with a simple lookup table that they would check
against every time they received an event OR I could change the label on
the
device to read something a little more helpful, like (Head Office HUB).

Does this:-
 1.) make sense
2.) sound like a feasible idea
3.) Has anyone else done this? or worked around it.

These devices are not in the DNS Server entries.

Any help/ thoughts/criticisms openly accepted

Regards
