Hello Helen,

I think you will find NV 7.1.3 better at polling efficiently than 7.1.2. And
7.1.3 has many other fixes.

You don't mention how many objects in the database or if the map is
synchronizing a lot.

Here's some issues that I had on 7.1.x that slowed polling.

1) Don't enable use of the alternate community name file
(/usr/OV/conf/communityNames.conf). ( I think it is the "-h" netmon switch.
See serversetup or netmon man page.)
2) Check for the RES_RETRY=1 and RES_TIMEOUT=1 environment variables in the
/etc/environment file. This will help netmon performance.
3) Poor netmon.seed file setup, For example - don't add IP ranges to the
seed file that don't exist. I added networks that were supposed to be
installed but never quite made the final plan.
4) Check SNMP Configuration screen (xnmsnmpconf) and the Global Default
configuration. Leave auto-adjust polling enabled.
5) Check the archives for the pingstatus and snmpstatus scripts that Leslie
wrote. They give a quick and easy way to check ICMP and SNMP polling queues.

Let us know what you find.

Hello all,

Netview 7.1.2 AIX 4.3.3

I have netmon tracing turned on and noticed these messages in the
netmon.trace file:

12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[670] : ** no wait 12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[713] : --
timed out **
12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[670] : ** no wait 12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[713] : --
timed out **
12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[670] : ** no wait 12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[713] : --
timed out **
12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[670] : ** no wait 12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[713] : --
timed out **
12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[670] : ** no wait 12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[713] : --
timed out **
12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[670] : ** no wait 12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[713] : --
timed out **
12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[670] : ** no wait 12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[713] : --
timed out **
12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[670] : ** no wait 12:42:48 : .//nl_main.c[713] : --
timed out **

There are thousands of these lines in netmon.trace and netmon polling seems
to be running behind because of this (I get negative numbers when doing
netmon -a 3).

I don't think we have network problems and DNS works fine as well.
Don't know exactly when the problem started, probably this morning.

Has anyone seen this before ?
Any help is appreciated.

Regards,
Helen
