That makes sense about splitting the vtl drives up between media servers, but I'm still confused about the robot.  If robot is only defined on one media server, how does that work for the other media servers?  They don’t need a robot configured with a vtl?  Does the robot need to be configured on the master and not a media server?

You do not need SSO.
SSO is used for sharing physical tape drives.  In case of a VTL, you create new Virtual drives and assign them to the new media server. That's it.
So you are not sharing your drives!
Just make sure that you use only one media server for robotic control.
