A client only has to talk with the media server to perform a normal backup.

Archiving has to communicate with the master to ensure that the files are
backed up prior to deleting. It basically does a bplist to ensure that the
master has the file (which is a good thing).

I believe the clients also talk to the master regardless of what type of
backup you are running. The ports are open by defaults to enable that
communicate to happen. I am not sure if there is a separate port for
archive backups, what version of NBU are you running? Might want to engage
a network guys to put a sniffer on that switch to see what is getting
blocked.

Thanks

I have a client that can only talk with one of my media servers because of
firewalls we have in place. I can do regular backups on this server, but
I'm having a problem getting my archive backups to work. Does a client need
to be able to communicate directly with the master in order to perform an
archive backup?

Thanks
