Since you're doing RMAN backups to disk, the obvious, fast, choice is to
start doing RMAN incrementals to disk between the full backups; less data on
disk means less time to move it to tape. A full backup nightly, to tape or
to disk, is going to take time. The obvious time saver here is to do RMAN
incrementals. Nothing special from Netbackup, It's all about using the
inherent features of RMAN. It can do cummulative or differential backups of
the data.
If you want to do the RMAN backups, full or incremental, directly to tape
then you can get the Netbackup agent for Oracle but that's not really
necessary if you've got the disk space to stage the dump.
Another speed-up option is to have the DBA's use more channels to disk,
making more files in the dump area. Then use file-pattern matching to break
the files into multiple streams for the transfer to tape.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] RE: Oracle Backup
Gents,
We have an Oracle Database pretty active and large in size (500GB). Today we
are currently performing RMAN dumps and backing up from the dump area,
however the backups are full each night and take a while.
Our goal is to save our client some money and shorten the backup window
nightly.
What is a valid best practice for Oracle database backups? Is it the use of
BLIB?
Any comments would be appreciated
Thanks
Charles
