Dennis,

There is some documentation in the Veritas Netbackup 4.5 for Oracle
Sys Admin Guide. See Chapter 4. The manuals are in pdf formag on
the install CD.

We have sucessfully restored databases using the RMAN commands manually,
but have not used the GUI.

There are some sample scripts in the=20
/usr/openv/netbackup/ext/db=5Fext/oracle/samples/rman
directory. There are two scripts to study: database=5Frestore.sh and=20
database=5Frestore.rcv

Your scenario seems OK. There are some complications if you are restoring =

to a different client/host.
Here is a snip from the recover=5Fdatabase.rcv file It assumes you have=20
connected to the RMAN catalog:

We do cold backups of the rman catalog also, I don't remember any=20
problems with the archivelogs when
we have done restores using these procedures

Hope this helps.

[Veritas-bu] Oracle DR procedure!

Hi All
=20
I am sure there are allot of users out there who are doing online back=20
ups and restores of their Oracle databases.
I would like to know what the correct steps I should follow to do a full=20
Oracle DR restore of any of my databases.
I have no oracle knowledge, and I need to prove to a client that we can=20
restore their database in a DR situation.
=20
The procedure I follow is:
- restore the rman catalog onto the DR server. (I do cold backups =

of the rman catalog, as well as the pfile. Is this the best way?)
- Bring RMAN online reading the new controlfiles and datafiles.
- Create the database instance of the database I want restored.
- Take that database into nomount mode, and restore the=20
controlfiles through rman.
- Mount the database and run the ?restore database; recover=20
database? in rman.
- Open database.
The problem is that I always have problems opening the database, even if I =

do a ?open with resetlogs? option. I noticed that it always looks for the=20
one archivelog file after the latest one backed up. I take it this is the=20
redolog file. So I normally do a restore until the last log file on tape,=20
but oracle still complains when I try to open it.=20
=20
Also, you have to have the exact same file structure for the oracle files=20
in order to restore, unless you redirect every stream....is this the best=20
way.
Can anyone please tell me if I am doing this the correct way.=20
I cannot find any documentation on the Veritas web site regarding this=20
procedure, and I find that you cannot restore any databases through the=20
Netbackup gui even though you have successfull backups. It just doesn?t=20
show your database. If you create a new database with teh same name, it=20
will show you current database under restore selections, and not any of=20
your backed up data.
=20
Should the entire restore procedure be done in RMAN? What can do you=20
through the Netbackup interface?
Thanks in advance.
=20
Dennis
