I found out something interesting concerning media errors. Since I work for
the government, tapes are purchased in huge lots from the lowest vendor, it
seems. I have learned that with Fuji and Maxell, I don't have to do anything
physically to the tape for NB to use it. With Imation, and I have tested
this many times, without running bplabel on every new tape, getting Media
Errors is almost certain. After months of testing this, a co worker found a
published article that confirms what I had found out, except his this
company tested LTO tapes, I use DLT. I have a hard copy of this article and
once I submitted this to my purchasing group, we no longer buy Imation and I
have not had to bplabel tapes. Now, the only media errors I receive are when
the drives are overdue for a cleaning. Also, the
/usr/openv/netbackup/MEDIA_ERROR_THRESHOLD file has no affect on user
directed backups. The user must put this error threshold in their scripts.

ps-if anyone wants a copy of this article, I can try to find it on line
somewhere.

Well taking the perspective of the software logic, what they are tracking
and watching it is difficult to discern what is a physical tape drive
problem and what it a physical media cartridge problem. It should however
use a different drive when it retries.

I haven't heard of a way to do what you propose.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Media Write Error Problem

In our Windows environment (Win2k Master and media servers running NBU
5.0GA) we occasionally get jobs that fail with media write errors. The
problem is they are setup to retry. When they run the second time, they try
to use the same media id as the first run. This causes the whole job to fail
because that media is still bad. Is there a way in NetBackup to force the
retry job to go to a different tape? It seems pretty dumb to retry a job
that ended with a media write error to the same bad tape a second time.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Kris
