We use AIT-3 tapes, which hold 100 GB natively and up to 260 GB
compressed, in a Spectra Logic 20K library. (I know we'll never see 260
GB, but we do have a lot with up to 190 GB.) However, I've noticed that
for one of our volume pools the tapes are being marked as full with only
about 85+/-5 GB. The data being written to the tapes is already (and
must be for disk storage purposes) compressed with gzip, so am I correct
in assuming that the software compression (about 75%) is leading to the
hardware compression actually inflating the data somewhat? Is there
anything I can do about this? The files average around 41 MB
compressed, 186 MB uncompressed.
