Sorry, the thought just popped into my head, and I shot the question off!

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. In other words, for instance on a Solaris 
box, bpend_notify or backup_exit_notify *could* be written in Perl?

That's great news for me, as my Perl is much sharper than my shell =).
