I used to attend a particular "mainframe" vendor user's conference. In
order to make sure it wasn't all just vendor promos but also a healthy
dose of actual USER experience, user tips, real world installs, etc.,
presentations, they gave substantial discounts for the conference reg to
any presenter.
I think all this was possible because the USER GROUP itself, not the
company, actually ran the conference. The vendor was always the
spotlight/highlight and primary invited guests, but they weren't running
the conference itself. The user group had National and local/regional
chapter officers, etc, and the National officers contracted with
conference booking services/agents.
Let's see, how to put this nicely, yet bluntly, those "mainframe"
conferences weren't very concerned about who or what would be the
evening entertainment, but more concerned about what one could learn by
attending.
I only stopped attending that conference because I've moved to other
areas, away from that vendor's product.

I am quite new to this list, but from reading the posts of several
regular contributors, I already have an idea or two regarding who I
would vote for to be the officers of an _independent_ Veritas user's
group. If there is already an independent Veritas user's group ......
sorry folks, but you aren't making yourselves very well known.
