With LTO, the first thing you'd need to check is where the RFID chip is, and
can it be moved with the tape. Reprogramming the new one is an option of
course, but most of us don't have the equipment for that.
I would probably send the tape to a data recovery specialist (if it was that
important), and since the tape itself is likely in good shape it would
hopefully not cost much.

Subject: Fixing a damaged cartridge?
Hi,
If you had an LTO-4 tape that was physically damaged as far as the
cartridge casing, so you didn't want to risk loading into a drive, but
the tape was otherwise fine, is it easy to take it apart (unscrew) and
re-insert the tape reel into another new cartridge?
Obviously, you'd have to be careful to line up the leader pin correctly
so it looks the same as far as how it's positioned when looking through
the slider shutter on the side. Seems to me I played around with an old
LTO-3 or LTO-1 scratch tape one time (same construction on the case as
two pieces with screws), and it was not trivial as it was under tension
and just flew all over the place, parts, spring, etc. making it
difficult to reassemble reliably, parts, etc. Has anyone ever done this
before? Is it tricky and not advised? What would be the best way to test
that you had done it correctly?
Obviously, if it was a clone volume, and you still have the original
volume(s), you could simply re-clone it, and take that tape out of
circulation but just asking. Thought I'd seen some documentation on this
before, but just wanted to get the opinion of folks here.
No this isn't necessary, just theorizing.
