In regard to: [Networker] Networker server with failed hard drive, Roy...:

I inherited an old Legato Networker (pre-EMC days) box some time back. It
was running 6.1.4 on Linux/x86 (probably somewhere around 2.6.18).

The hard drive of the server has failed and I need to attempt to restore
it from the tapes. I'm hoping to recover the contents of the /nsr
directory in such a way that A) the licensing works on the replacement
hard drive once I install a new OS, and B) the state of the backup system
is recovered. In other words, I'd like to install a new OS, install the
Networker RPMs and recover the /nsr file structure from the tapes written
by the now-failed system.

I'm anything but a Networker expert, I knew enough to maintain the backups
that were already running and not much more. Any help that could be
offered would be appreciated.

You're on the right track. In the event of a disaster, you generally

- procure new hardware
- install the OS
- install NetWorker
- go through the disaster recovery procedure documented in the NetWorker
disaster recovery guide, which involves using "mmrecov" to recover a
copy of the media database and resource file(s) from the most recent
  bootstrap backup you have.

The trouble for you is the ancient version of NetWorker you're using.
You're going to want to install the exact same version of NetWorker
(6.1.4). That version is so old that it's not going to work on any
modern OS that you would install, so you're probably going to have to
install something pretty old.

You'll have something like 30 or 45 days to get licensing straightened out
after you get other stuff working, so I wouldn't be too concerned about
that up front. If you use the exact same IP address and hostname as on
your previous server, licensing will likely just work.
