I don't think current tape drives are capable of doing this.

Out of interest, why would you want to do this? Do you want to guarantee
that the data can never be recovered, or are you hoping to re-use the
bits of tape in between save sets? In either case, the only way to do
this would be to stage off the bits you want to another tape, then
recycle/overwrite the original.

It works for adv_file devices.
