You would have to do a saveset restore instead of a file/DAR restore.
You would have to restore the entire QTREE otherwise. If that's not a
doable solution, you would have to look at some sort of disk-to-tape
staging.

Otherwise, what we do is to have a large enough snapshot region, and
have snapmirror restore option. We rarely have to recover something from
tape, we mainly backup for DR rather than restores.

So, all of those using NDMP from Netapps, how well do DAR restores
work? I keep hearing of the gotcha that you have a limit of 10,240
files (or is it now 1 million?) per restore. We have qtrees with TONS
of files in them, so having to break down restores could be very
problematic.

For example, if I have /vol/data/blah/bar/ with 20,000 files and I
want to restore it, but I've been backing up /vol/data/blah, which has
300,000 files in it, will Networker just do the right thing and break
the restore into chunks, or will I need to do is manually?

This seems to be the biggest limitation of NDMP & DAR, and the one
that worries us the most, since it's not backups that users care
about, it's restores.
