David,

I don't try to use Networker at all for this.

A long time ago (before we had Networker) we created an MS Access database
to keep track of backup tapes and other media that we send to our off-site
storage service provider as well as archives that are kept in-house. The
data for each piece of media includes a date to be returned. Every working
day we update or enter media that were sent off-site into the DB and print a
report of media to be returned the following day.

This is not a big burden for us because we're a pretty small operation. In
a typical week we have 7 pieces of media going out and coming back. In the
past though, with older backup technologies we've had as many as 30-40
pieces per week going out and returning. By setting up the DB right and
perhaps using a few macros you can make the process of updating the DB
fairly painless.

If you'd like more details about out DB let me know.

Dave

Just wondering what everyone else does to track, and mark, offsite
tapes. The process within Networker is very labor intensive, and I was
wondering what other people were using. I was looking at Bocada
software, but that's more of a Networker backup management piece of
software. I was wondering if there was something like that for tape
management - specifically telling an operator (non-backup person) what
tapes need to be brought offsite, what tapes can come back from offsite,
and then "marking" the appropriate location of those tapes within
Networker.

Any information would be appreciated.
