Some of the other sites in New Orleans had TRUE disasters - e.g.,
completely wiped out data centers.

Some people had cold sites that they activated. One downside to this is
that there is usually a SHORT term lease associated with it - sometimes
as short as 6 weeks. With our local Bell carrier having its problems,
6 weeks was not long enough. Some parts of the city still do not have
telephone service today (13 months later). So, if you are going to go
to a cold site, realize that they might make you move to an intermediate
site (6 - 12 months), until your permanent site is available. I had a
friend of mine go to Philly for the first 6 weeks, and while they were
getting that site up (cold site), they had to also prepare a site in
Dallas, as they knew their New Orleans site wouldn't be ready for at
least 10 months.

I don't expect too many Katrina's out there, but realize in your DR
planning, that you might lose your primary site for longer than just a
couple of days/months. City infrastructure is key - phone, electricity,
water, etc.

On the upside, we had tremendous support from 2 of our vendors (DELL &
Spectralogic). Most vendors jump at the chance to play hero, so they
tend to bend over backwards to help you out.

I could go on for hours and hours about what we did right, AND what we
did wrong but it is way too much to include in this email.

I read (with interest) the thread about disaster recovery. (Recovering
tapes on Server B if Server A dies and you can not change Server B name
because it is in use as a full time server)...

Our disaster plan has to be a little more "NEW ORLEANS" (what if the
site is completely wiped out!?)

I love reading other people's disaster plans even while I am refine my
own. Do any of you have disaster plans you could share with me?

Of particular interest is complete SERVER ROOM disaster (aka no other
server in room can be used)....

Some of the best plans (on a budget) that I have read have included
LEASING a server that meets the H/W & S/W requirements on a month by
month basis while you rebuild your server room with PURCHASED H/W.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Always Faithful & Prepared! /ALE
