You generally can't remove data from the middle of a tape.

Almost all consumer-grade devices will not allow you to read anything
past the last write on the tape. So any attempt to overwrite something
in the middle of a volume will cause everything past that point to
become inaccessible.

Is the aborted saveset not also expired/recyclable? Usually they will
be marked recyclable immediately.

On the volume are there any savesets that are not currently recyclable?

/usr/sbin/mminfo -av -q 'volume=<vol>,!ssrecycle' -r
'volume,client,ssflags,ssretent,volretent'
