This may not be the case, but the same thing happened to me and it was
a network card misconfiguration. The card was on autonegotiate and the
switch port it was on was set at 100 Full duplex. The backup process would
give less than 100Kb/s. When I configured the switch port to autoneg the
speed bumped immediatelly to several megs/sec.
