The way this whole thing could/should work from my past experience is
the following.

1. Stop SQL Server
2. Run the Timefinder script that creates the BCVs
3. Restart SQL server
4. Mount the BCVs as windows drives
5. Backup the data you want from the BCV drives (full/incremental/diff)
6. Run a script that will unmount the BCV drives and restore them to
their original function
