I'd agree that cloning is probably the way to go but in case cloning
isn't practical what about using manual backups?

The manual backups don't interact with the other backup levels
and so can be used between fulls without worrying about the next
incremental depending on it. You will have to run the manual backup
on each of the filesystems separately(ie "save /", "save /usr",...),
but this could be scripted. The nsrexec command can be used to
run the backups without logging into each system[1]:

# RCMD="save /" RUSER=root nsrexec -c client

Setting up a new media pool which holds only manual backups will
put the data on the correct tapes so you could remove them for
shipping. Anyone see a problem with this method?

[1] - There was a message back in November 2000 from George Scott
describing the details on using nsrexec to run commands on networker
clients. Search the archives for "password for ruser" to find the thread.
