So do oracle and sybase (and informix for that matter), and with
much greater flexibility than postgres (which is an all or nothing
SQL dump of the database or table). What they are discussing
here is a different kind of networker integration with a product
that provides a plethora of options, not basic functionality.

I think your information might be a bit old. He listed "full and
incrementals, on-line or off-line, and to disk or to tape". All of which
PostgreSQL can do without external help. In my last job, we used Informix
for some very large databases (like the Hilton Hotels reservations system)
and couldn't do hot backups without helper software. We used the Veritas
NetBackup XBSA module with Informix ONBAR.

I understand Oracle recently adopted the PostgreSQL approach of a
Multi-Version Concurrency Control (MVCC) to avoid read lock collisions,
which is what makes the hot backups possible.

The only fancy trick we could do with Informix that PostgreSQL can't is
point-in-time recovery, which is supposed to be in the next release.

Plus, dumps aren't limited to SQL (check the COPY FROM statement), and you
can dump and load schema's or rows or tables independently if you like.
