Hi,

We have been running AlphaStor (AS) for a couple of months - we changed to
StorageTek gateway because the only thing we need, is a proxy to our ACSLS
for securerity purpose (we have multiple backupservers which may not see
each other)

We started at version 1.2 which where pretty unstable, but thanx to hard
work form Legato and AlphaStor developers we got backported alot of features
from the 2.0 version and the product got very stable and easy to use.

My problems with it at the end of our test where : it's runnging Windows
only (im a *NIX person ;) ), tape allocation and inventory is pretty slow
compared to talking directly to ACSLS, allocating and inventorying +1500
tapes takes hours. mounting and dismounting tapes is slow, it got
significant better, but it's still (u)mountes one drive at a time instead of
multiple which my ACSLS does (I got 2 PowderHorn's and therefor 2 arms too
move catridges with, therefor it's irretationg to see only one operate at a
time instead of both); it seems that all commands are one command at a time
instead of many like ACSLS, it needs a lock to be sure that it can send the
commands which takes some time to establish. For all functions to be working
it needs bi-directional communication with the backup servers, which i can't
have because of security - ex. if AlphaStor is located outside of firewall
:) The functions that didn't work for this reason was: how many times a tape
was used (my ACSLS does that for me), problems with drives/tapes the AS
neeeds/wants to repport to networker ... all in all not any things that was
critical just nice to have.
My conclusions is if u got PowderHorn's or any thing else running ACSLS use
STK gateway functions , it's stable, running *NIX ;) and uses tomcat all
known things to me - do you need jukebox sharing, mixed media and
tapehandling then AS is a great product which you need to take a look at -
the new 2.0 version looked good in january, and if there is a 2.1 version
i'm sure it's even better :)

If you have questions or comments, please let med know :)

Best regards, Med venlig hilsen

We have presentation of it (2.1) next week by guys from
Legato. Before I had experience with some previous version
which was rather cool and much easier than SmartMedia. From
what I saw so far in test demo environment it was both reliable
and stable.

Cheers,

I didn't see any responses to this, nor any recent AlphaStor feedback in
the archives.

Does anyone yet have any real-world opinions on AlphaStor? I don't need
its level of media management (yet), but I do wish to support mixed
media in my Scalar1000 (DLT and LTO), and AlphaStor may give me that
functionality without costing much more than library partitioning
alternatives.

Most specifically, with AlphaStor, do I loose any of the built-in
Networker functionality, such as mminfo reports, nsrjb options, etc.?
Also, is it reliable and stable?

Thanks,
Jason
