You should still spool attributes, though. Those zillions of files cause 
zillions of database writes. This can dramatically improve database 
write performance.

Also, try turning off compression. Compression is performed on the 
client, so could potentially slow the client's throughput rate, 
particularly an old or otherwise relatively low performance client.
