A bit too complicated for my taste.  One main reason why I switched to
Bacula was that I didn't want to rely on complicated scripts any more
when backing up our data.

I don't want to say that your solution won't work.  I'm just saying that
people tend to forget scripts (the mere fact that they are running) and
what they actually do..  and years later you find yourself wondering,
why on earth something keeps restarting your Bacula director.
