I do not recommend snapshots.  The database is not guaranteed to be in a 
proper state. PITR ensure that.  I am not a fan of snapshots for 
database backups unless you can ensure the database *is* consistent. 
You may be OK, you may not be.

I recommend using one of the documented backup strategies at the URL 
which appears in another post.
