That's a fair point. BackupPC assumes you have already sorted out the
authentication system before setting up clients. I'm a nut for SSH, but
even I found the "Unable to read 4 bytes" error unusually obtuse. It
would be nice if BackupPC printed the SSH auth error instead of that.
