You can also 'tail -f' the BackupPC log.
It's located in $LogDir and it's called LOG. At verbosity level 1 (default), you can see xfer error, backups starting and backups ending. At bigger verbosity level (XferLogLevel), you can log more informations.
Of course also 'du' can help.
