I back up two OS X desktops, but neither is using Filevault. From
BackupPC's perspective, they're just another ssh+rsync target, and
perform as well as any Linux PC I've got.
I also back up multiple Linux machines using eCryptFS on ext4.
Performance hit is negligible. Perhaps 95% (or better) of native ext3/4.
I would be surprised if Filevault is much worse.
In both cases, the user's home directory looks like a normal directory
once they are logged in, and backs up as normal. Remember to exclude the
encrypted eCryptFS/Filevault files themselves.
