As a general statement, the main difference between Linux distributions is
their focus, their package systems, and what's included.

Since BackupPC specifically puts stress upon a filesystem, I'd be inclined
to select a distribution that provides xfs and/or jfs. Some Linux
distributions have BackupPC included as part of their package system; this
can make things easier or more difficult depending on how much tinkering
you're inclined to do and whether or not you understand the distribution's
paradigm.

These days, I'd be inclined to select a distribution in x86-64 rather than
x86 in the event that zfs becomes a reasonable option in the future, but I
probably wouldn't make that a deciding factor.

At the moment, I'm running Gentoo for the BackupPC servers, due to its
source-based package system and ease of adding filesystems.
