Thank you Carl and Tino.  It turned out to be a line I had just put in my
.bashrc file.  Instead of this:

[ -f ~/bin/bashrc_custom ] && . ~/bin/bashrc_custom

..it was this:

[ -f ~/bin/bashrc_custom ] & . ~/bin/bashrc_custom

Notice the single "&".
