Hello
Is it possible to use something a hard drive cartridge like this

as a "real" tape device in Amanda ? ( Not vtape )
I was wondering if there are physical properties of a hard drive which
prevent it from being used like a tape.

They *are* different.

One is a sequential device and one is a random access device. The drivers are different. A drive, even a removable drive, simply is not a tape.

The vtape is an Amanda innovation that allows you to do backups with a dump cycle to a series of drive partitions, directories, removable drives, as though they were tapes. It's a sort of glue between Amanda and the actual device drivers. What's not to like about that?
