The trouble seems to be related to OpenNMS--though this is peculiar.

With OpenNMS stopped, amcheck works:

[amanda@amanda ~]$ amcheck Daily
Amanda Tape Server Host Check
-----------------------------
Holding disk /var/tmp/amanda: 12440004 KB disk space available, that's plenty
amcheck-server: slot 19: date 20060331 label Daily019 (active tape)
amcheck-server: slot 20: date 20060301 label Daily020 (exact label match)
NOTE: skipping tape-writable test
Tape Daily020 label ok
NOTE: info dir /var/lib/amanda/Daily/curinfo/rdhcp/_var: does not exist
NOTE: index dir /var/lib/amanda/Daily/index/rdhcp/_var: does not exist
Server check took 168.460 seconds

Amanda Backup Client Hosts Check
--------------------------------
Client check: 8 hosts checked in 11.058 seconds, 0 problems found

(brought to you by Amanda 2.4.4p3)
[amanda@amanda ~]$

With OpenNMS restarted on rdhcp, the amcheck still works!

[amanda@amanda ~]$ amcheck Daily
Amanda Tape Server Host Check
-----------------------------
Holding disk /var/tmp/amanda: 12439908 KB disk space available, that's plenty
amcheck-server: slot 20: date 20060301 label Daily020 (exact label match)
NOTE: skipping tape-writable test
Tape Daily020 label ok
NOTE: info dir /var/lib/amanda/Daily/curinfo/rdhcp/_var: does not exist
NOTE: index dir /var/lib/amanda/Daily/index/rdhcp/_var: does not exist
Server check took 34.533 seconds

Amanda Backup Client Hosts Check
--------------------------------
Client check: 8 hosts checked in 1.168 seconds, 0 problems found

(brought to you by Amanda 2.4.4p3)
[amanda@amanda ~]$

So I am unable to duplicate the problem...perhaps if I let opennms
run for a few hours,, it will recurr.

Note: please do not respond to the old thread. It was inadvertently
"hijacked"--my outlook web access email client can neither see nor
manipulate the References: header. I've tried the Thunderbird email
client, which shows this header, and which is thread-aware.
I thank the list for informing me these features.
