Also, if you rewind the tape or go to the position of the beginning of the 
backup, you can
  file - < /dev/nst0
repeatedly to see what is there. That and
  mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 1
when needed to go to the next file in the tape. Of course use your tape device 
instead of /dev/nst0.
