What is your OS?  Linux I presume?  Try to pilot your changer with mtx:
        mtx -f /dev/sg0 inquiry
        mtx -f /dev/sg0 status
        mtx -f /dev/sg0 transfer 1 2
If these commands work, you are all set.  You might want to link 
/dev/changer to sg0 so that you don't need to give the `-f /dev/sg0' 
every time; then configure chg-zd-mtx by following the instructions in 
amanda.conf and the chg-zd-mtx script in amanda's libexec directory. 
Actually quite straightforward, you should be going in less than an
hour.
