Dear all,
Thanks for all your help.
I upgraded to Fedora Core 2 and got all my e-mails backs.
What I did, whcih I will be submitting a patch to the RESTORE doc is:
Installed the amanda RPM and used amrestore i.e.:
amrestore /dev/nst0 hostname '/etc$'
which searched for that partition.
I got the latest level 0, then level 1 for /etc and /home
Then used "tar -xvpf filename" to get all the files.
Much, much easier than mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 1 and using dd.
Thoughts?
Gavin.

Tip one:
stay calm. Tip two: Read docs/RESTORE.
In short: As root
do: use basic unix commands to position tape like: mt -f
/dev/nst0 fsf 1 use basic dd to read the 32k header of each file on
tape: dd if=/dev/rmt/0n bs=32k count=1 And notice it
contains the command you need to type to restore that backup
image: (position again using mt above, and cd to the correct
top directory!) dd if=/dev/nst0 bs=32k
skip=1 | gzip -d | gtar -xpvf -
