However, if I change the disklist to backup the parent directory,
 /export/rd01/mltipath, everything runs fine.  The permissions on
the two directories are the same...

So... what am I missing?

Lost the suid-root of runtar (in .../libexec/ )?

I guess when you backup the parent, that it skips the
subdirectory.  Have you verified the contents of the supposedly
succeeded backup?
