Thanks. I don't know exactly what my colleague changed in the firewall, but 
after I recompiled Amanda with the UDP ports restricted to 800-850 (and 
informed him), things magically (?) started to work. Finally going to do a 
full backup of all "my" machines tonight and if everything works as fine as 
it looks, it's time to abolish my home-grown scripts.
