I checked root's mailbox, and it's empty. If cron/amanda did try
sending emails, I don't know where they went. :)

Are you saying create a crontab file for the amanda user, and if so,
how? I did give this a shot with "crontab -e" as the amanda user (i.e.
su amanda), but that didn't work at all (no emails or backups).

Well, I got emails sent to me every minute or so, and running lsof
didn't tell me much that I could make sense of. Here's the output:
