what tape info (device etc) are you using in the amanda.conf

tapedev "/dev/nrtape"
rawtapedev "/dev/tape"
(Yep, I have a changer, too.)
and do you use the same one when doing other dumps?
No, I concluded that the tape drive must be all right because I could
write to a different one with a different config on a different host...
Seriously, though - of course I'm using the same one for the other dumps!
It might also be interesting to dump the failed holding area to a
different drive, but I don't have an additional unit that I can test on.

No. dd what exactly? I don't think dd'ing to the device in general is very
interesting since I *know* it works. dd the exact data that fails,
perhaps...
