ahhh, what beauty. I compiled mtx-1.3.4 (unstable), and used it to control
the changer. Once I was able to control the changer arm, I ran mtx status,
and discovered that the changer thought all tape slots were full, as well as
the tape drives.

So I manually inserted a tape into each drive, and issued the changer to
eject the tapes. This refreshed the status, showing the drives as empty,
and tape slots as full.

amtape can now insert/eject tapes again. I'm running amcheck now to ensure
that everything is working.

Thanks for the assistance.

Try controlling the device with mtx while doing a tail -f on
/var/log/messages.

Check your cabling :-)
