Thanks, Jeremy, for your suggestion. This is a Debian system, which used to 
have the Debian stable release of amanda on it, until I got it all fouled up 
and decided to strip it out and install the latest amanda 2.4.4 from scratch. I 
used 'apt-get remove' to take out all the Debian amanda, then searched and 
manually removed anything that was left behind, before I started to install the 
tarball. I obviously missed something, however, as I just did a find for 
amreport, and found a whole suite of amanda programs in /usr/sbin, in addition 
to the 2.4.4 ones I just installed in /usr/local/sbin. I just erased them.

Kevin,

It's possible you still have the rpms installed which RH does by default 
(sometimes). Are you running a version of RedHat?
